After graduating from Hanford I completed a Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Washington. In July 1983 I began working at IBM in San Jose in the disk drive and storage subsystem business. 36 years later I am still at IBM in San Jose. Barbara was another young engineer at IBM and we married in 1987.
We have 3 children, Jocelyn is 26, she earned a Bioengineering degree from UCLA and currently works at BioRad Labs in the SF Bay Area. She previously worked at Theranos before it's founder became infamous.
Martin is 22 and has an Environmental Resource Management degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He works for the City of Fremont (Bay Area) concentrating on storm water runoff management and pollution control.
Ian is 19 and is a sophomore at Oregon State University. He is majoring in Computer Science. His current Physics professor is Paul Emigh (son of Roger Emigh - Hanford class of 79).
All 3 children have very red hair which is odd since mine is brown. My youngest son is 6' 5" which is also odd since both parents are 5' 8".
In addition to work, the other activity that consumes much of my time is Scouting. I was the Scoutmaster for BSA Troop 286 in San Jose for 7 years and now am an Assistant Scoutmaster helping my successor run a successful troop. Our troop has about 80 scouts. Camping every month and doing a long backpacking trip every summer keeps me feeling young. Our week long backpacking trips have been to places such as Yosemite, Lost Coast of California, Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho, White Cloud Mountains in Idaho, Three Sisters in Oregon, and Philmont BSA High Adventure Base in New Mexico. I think I would feel older if not for all of the Scouting activities.
I usually make it to the Tri-Cities each year at Christmas to visit family. My parents have passed away but my brothers and sister are all in Washington.
